What to Expect During Standby Generator Installation

A standby installation moves through assessment, equipment selection, approvals, preparation, installation and startup. Some stages depend on other trades or utilities. Your written proposal should identify the included work, responsibilities and scheduling dependencies before installation is arranged.

From estimate to operating standby power.

A generator project moves through assessment, equipment selection, approvals, preparation, electrical and fuel work, commissioning and owner handoff. Some stages can overlap; others depend on outside approvals or utility work.

What a written scope should explain.

Identify the exact generator and switch, intended coverage and load-management devices. Clarify whether the project includes panel/service work, support or anchorage, routing, trenching and restoration.

Fuel supply, utility changes, tank work and startup responsibilities should be assigned explicitly. A generator delivery is not the same as a completed, commissioned installation.

Florida requirements are checked for your address.

The Florida Building Commission identifies the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code as effective December 31, 2023. Its development record identifies the 2020 NEC selection for that edition. The applicable code, local authority and project scope must be verified when the work is planned.

Hillsborough County routes building and subtrade permit applications through HillsGovHub. Pinellas explicitly lists generator, new/extended gas and LP-tank categories. These are jurisdiction examples, not a statewide permit package or a fixed turnaround promise.

04 / Permits & Installation Timeline

Separate time on site from the project calendar.

Equipment procurement, fuel work, utility upgrades, structural needs and inspections can all affect elapsed time. An estimate request does not reserve an installation slot, and a desired timeframe remains a preference until scheduling is confirmed.

We avoid promising a one-day or one-week completion before the property, scope and current dependencies are known. Ask which milestones remain open and who owns the next step.

Keep an owner information package.

At handoff, keep model/serial records, manuals, inspection and commissioning information, the equipment warranty and any extended agreement. Identify who completes registration or redemption and any relevant deadlines.

Arrange qualified maintenance separately. Monitoring setup and an app account do not replace an actual service arrangement.

A little more clarity

Your questions, answered.

Who handles gas or propane?

The proposal should name the qualified trade and coordination responsibility.

Will I need a permit?

Confirm the actual scope and authority; Pinellas explicitly lists generator and gas categories.

How soon can it be installed?

Scheduling depends on the approved project and current availability.

Does submitting the form reserve a date?

No.

Your home. A clearer backup plan.

Let’s turn your questions into a plan.

A free estimate prices a defined installation. Troubleshooting an unexplained fault is separate paid diagnostic work, with charges explained before approval.
