How Automatic Transfer and Load Management Work
An automatic standby system changes the source supplying the connected installation after the generator is ready. Load management can help keep selected demand within the available capacity by giving some appliances priority. The transfer equipment, generator and controls need to be chosen as a compatible system.

What happens when utility power goes out?
The system detects the interruption, starts the generator and transfers the connected installation once the source is ready. When utility power returns and the controls confirm it, the system transfers back and completes its cooling cycle.
There is a startup-and-transfer interval. Automatic backup should not be described as instant, uninterrupted power.
- 1Utility interruption
Controls detect loss of supply.
- 2Generator startup
The backup source becomes ready.
- 3Transfer
Connected loads use generator power.
- 4Utility returns
Controls verify the returning source.
- 5Return & cooldown
The system transfers back and finishes its cycle.
Conceptual event order, not a wiring diagram. Exact timing depends on the equipment and conditions.

Transfer and load management have separate jobs.
Transfer equipment selects the source supplying the connected installation. Load management controls selected demand so that priorities fit the available generator capacity.
Some homes use a defined backed-up circuit group. Others connect more of the home through a suitable transfer arrangement and manage selected large loads. Your proposal should describe the arrangement in household terms.
| Equipment | Its job | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Generator | Produces power within its ratings | Guarantee every appliance can run together |
| Automatic transfer switch | Changes the supply source | Increase generator output |
| Load management | Prioritizes or pauses selected loads | Create extra generating capacity |
Know which appliances can take turns.
Ask for the priority order and the conditions that cause a load to pause. A delay may be intentional system behavior, rather than a fault. Make sure the proposed priorities match how your household uses cooling, hot water and other large equipment.
The agreed priority loads stay ahead in the control plan.
Compatible management may pause it until capacity is available.

The generator, controls and transfer equipment need to work as a compatible system. Service-entrance rating, electrical arrangement, neutral/bonding requirements where applicable and safe isolation from the utility are professional design responsibilities.
Generac’s G0099340 product page names Evolution and Power Zone 200 compatibility for that particular switch. That does not mean every existing Generac switch works with every new generator. Reusing equipment requires a review of the actual model, condition and installation.

Check the system before the handoff.
The installation process should include the required inspections, startup and an operational transfer check. Keep the model information, manuals, commissioning records and service contacts with your owner documents.
A portable-generator inlet, interlock or manual switch belongs to a different service. Surge protection also serves a distinct purpose: a generator is not a guarantee against every surge.
Your questions, answered.
Is transfer instant?
No; there is a startup/transfer interval.
Does a 200 A switch produce 200 A of backup?
No; the generator is the source.
Can I reuse my existing transfer switch?
Compatibility and condition require professional review.
Is this the same as a portable interlock?
No. Portable interlocks and manual connections are a separate service; use our portable-generator inlet and transfer-switch guide.
Keep planning your standby system.
