Natural Gas or Propane for Your Standby Generator?
The right fuel choice depends on the supply available at your address and the system your property can support. Natural gas uses a utility connection; propane uses stored fuel. Either choice needs a properly designed fuel arrangement and an outage plan that matches the generator and household demand.

Natural gas uses utility-delivered service. Propane uses stored fuel on the property. Neither choice is settled by the generator’s ability to operate on both fuels: the supply must support the generator and other connected appliances.

Availability is not the same as capacity.
A utility availability check is an early screen. The meter, delivered capacity, piping arrangement and pressure under load still need review with the generator and other gas equipment considered together.
For propane, tank selection involves more than a desired number of outage hours. A qualified provider evaluates usable inventory, delivery access and the complete fuel-system design. Nominal tank capacity is not the same as usable fuel allocated to an outage.

For Generac G0072820, the product page lists 2.23 gallons per hour at half load and 3.97 at full load on propane. These are reference conditions, not a fixed household burn rate.
The calculator divides your assumed usable gallons by the selected hourly consumption. Actual demand changes. This tool does not size a tank, establish a safe withdrawal rate or promise operating time.
