An electrical surge is a short rise in voltage. It can originate outside your home or when electrical equipment switches on and off. It is different from an outage, a brownout or a voltage problem that continues instead of ending quickly.
A surge protective device, or SPD, limits certain transient overvoltages by providing a controlled path for surge current. It does not keep electricity flowing during an outage. Nor does it repair an open neutral, correct damaged wiring or make a home immune to lightning.
A sensible plan starts with your service equipment, the loads you care about and the paths connected to them. The installation matters as much as the product on the proposal.

A panel or service SPD is selected for the electrical system and its installation location. It creates a central layer for certain transient overvoltages. It supplies no backup power and does not fix a wiring fault.
A suitable device at equipment such as the outdoor A/C can complement panel protection. It must match the load, environment and manufacturer instructions. A power strip indoors does not serve this hardwired unit.
Listed point-of-use protection can serve suitable plug-connected electronics. A separate cable or data connection may need compatible protection too. A power-only strip does not address every connected path.

We review the service and panel arrangement, relevant equipment, safe mounting options and manufacturer requirements. The selected device must suit the voltage system and installation—not just the brand name on the panel.
Your proposal should distinguish the panel SPD, any equipment-level devices and related work. Permit and utility requirements depend on the actual project and location. A Type 1 marking does not give blanket permission to install equipment inside a utility meter enclosure.
A free estimate is appropriate for defined installation work. If unexplained damage, flickering or another active fault needs investigation, that is paid diagnostic work; the fee is explained and approved before testing.
After installation, keep the model information, proof of purchase and warranty documents. Ask which visible indicator means protection is available, what a fault indication means and who to contact if it changes.
The warranty on the surge device and a connected-equipment reimbursement program are different promises. Coverage may depend on installation, eligible ownership, protection of other incoming paths, proof of failure, insurance, exclusions and short claim deadlines.
An advertised household cap can also have a much smaller limit for each damaged item. Removal, diagnosis, labor, shipping and reinstalling equipment may not be included. Ask for the current terms for the exact model before treating a dollar amount as part of your decision.

Think of a surge as a very brief unwanted burst of electrical pressure. A surge device is there to limit that burst. It is not a spare source of electricity and it cannot smooth out every kind of power problem.
The panel device is the starting layer because it connects at a central point in the home’s electrical system. Selected equipment can still benefit from protection closer to it. Your A/C is hardwired, while a television may connect through both a power cord and a cable line. Those are different situations, so they do not always call for the same product.
Choosing a device is more than picking the biggest number on the box. It has to match the electrical system, be installed in an appropriate place and have requirements that can be met. We can help you understand those choices without asking you to open a panel or identify wiring.

No. A properly selected SPD can limit certain surges, but no device guarantees protection against every lightning event or every path into connected equipment. Separate lightning protection and surge protection serve different roles.
Often, yes, for appropriate plug-connected electronics. A listed point-of-use device can complement panel protection. An ordinary multi-outlet strip may provide no surge protection at all.
