Manufacturer specificationsSurge-current capacity, measured in kA, is not the same as nominal discharge current (In). Per-phase, per-mode and unspecified headline values should not be compared as if they describe the same test or total.
VPR is a standardized voltage protection rating for a specified mode, such as line-to-neutral. Lower values in the same mode can be useful to compare, but a single VPR does not describe installed performance under every surge. Connection length and routing also matter: unnecessarily long or looped leads can increase impedance. The installer follows the exact connection instructions; this is not a homeowner wiring task.
SCCR describes short-circuit suitability. It is not a surge-capacity score. MCOV concerns the voltage that can be applied continuously; it does not make an SPD a sustained-overvoltage remedy. The installer verifies these requirements for the actual system.

These values are in volts and come from the cited manufacturer documents. LN means line-to-neutral; LG line-to-ground; NG neutral-to-ground; LL line-to-line. They are specification comparisons, not a prediction of the voltage reaching your appliance in a particular event.
Notice that the HD2 and HD do not sort into the same order for every mode. That is why a simple claim that one model always clamps better would be misleading.

For these residential examples, confirm the intended 120/240-volt system, mounting environment, equipment compatibility, available fault current and the exact current instructions. An outdoor-rated enclosure still needs an appropriate installation; a NEMA enclosure rating is not permission to submerge a device.
Type 1 and Type 2 are not quality grades. The permitted connection location, required protection and utility restrictions determine the appropriate use. A Type 1 device is not automatically approved for a utility’s meter enclosure.
Breaker-format alternatives also need model-specific panel approval. A device that fits certain 1-inch panels does not thereby fit every Square D family, for example. The appearance of the breaker opening is not enough.
Other models may be considered after their current instructions and terms are checked. Do not substitute a look-alike product or assume that an older series has the ratings or warranty of a new generation.

A product warranty addresses the surge device itself. A connected-equipment program may reimburse eligible damage under separate conditions. The headline cap is a ceiling, not an automatic payment, insurance policy or assurance that lightning damage will be covered.
The condensed terms below are a starting point. The manufacturer’s full documents and the terms applicable to the purchased unit control. Obtain those documents with the proposal and keep the invoice, model and installation information.

The cited connected-equipment programs exclude direct or nearby-lightning situations as defined in their respective terms and sustained overvoltage conditions such as an open neutral. Coverage may be secondary to insurance or limited by a deductible. Diagnosis, removal, labor and shipping can remain the homeowner’s responsibility.
RectorSeal’s statement uses a 15-day initial notice requirement and a subsequent 30-day return deadline after the applicable return instructions. Its Series R connected-equipment provisions include a per-item cap and requirements for external signal paths. Review both the general statement and Schedule 1.
DITEK’s separate residential policy includes a 30-day claim notice requirement and coordinated protection conditions covering panel protection, appropriate Type 3 protection for electronics, signal paths and local protection for specified equipment. The policy text references an earlier UL edition while the current data sheets identify 5th Edition products; get written confirmation of the terms applicable to the proposed unit.
Eaton’s linked warranty uses a 30-day notice requirement and conditions concerning ownership, installation, protected connections and other recovery. Do not discard a damaged SPD or equipment before obtaining claim instructions. Preserve the evidence without handling unsafe equipment.

A surge protector can have several impressive numbers on its label, but they answer different questions. One describes a surge test. Another describes short-circuit suitability. Another describes the voltage rating for a particular path. Bigger is not automatically better, and numbers measured on different bases do not make a fair ranking.
Start with whether the product fits the home’s electrical system and can be installed correctly. Then consider features you can use, such as an indicator you can see or an alarm you can hear. A device that quietly reaches the end of its protection is not much help if nobody knows to ask about it.
Read a warranty as two separate conversations: what happens if the protector fails, and what happens if an appliance is damaged. A large household cap may have a much smaller cap per appliance. The program may also require other protection, quick notification and proof that the damage qualifies.
