Load Center vs Panelboard: What Is the Difference?

One equipment category, several everyday names.

Breaker box and electrical panel are everyday descriptions. Load center is the industry name commonly used for a smaller panelboard intended for residential or light commercial distribution. Panelboard is the broader technical category, and manufacturers also use it for commercial product families.

The words can overlap without making every product interchangeable. ABB, for example, lists its residential ReliaHome P and P+ load centers under UL 67, the panelboard standard. Read the actual equipment label and product documentation when comparing a proposal.

Compare the assembly, not just the label.

Main and subpanel describe a role, while load center and panelboard describe equipment. A main breaker inside a box does not, by itself, prove that the box is the service disconnect. A property can have an exterior disconnect and an indoor distribution panel.

What changes when the property is commercial?

A shop, office or other commercial space needs equipment selected for its actual supply and loads. That starts with the existing system, proposed equipment, shutdown requirements and documentation. Do not assume that a residential-style enclosure is wrong solely because it is in a business, or that a commercial-looking enclosure provides more usable power.

Commercial product families can offer different breaker mounting and configuration options. The important question is which complete assembly fits the design. A product-family comparison cannot replace checking the voltage, phase, fault-current rating, protection, location and approved combinations for that property.

• Describe the premises and any planned change of use or equipment.
• Bring existing drawings, schedules or inspection findings if available.
• Identify who controls access and approves an interruption.
• Ask whether the issue concerns one panel, its feeder or the whole electrical service.

A new name or a bigger enclosure is not the solution by itself.

Replacement should address an identified condition or project need. More spaces can help organize additional circuits, but do not establish that the feeder or service can support them. Changing a panel also does not repair every branch circuit connected to it.

Ask for a proposal that distinguishes the equipment being replaced, compatible circuit protection, any feeder or service work, permit coordination and the expected interruption. Manufacturer equipment coverage and installation labor coverage should be identified separately.
