Do You Need More Circuit Space or More Electrical Capacity?
Running out of breaker spaces is different from needing more electrical capacity. A suitable subpanel may provide additional circuit locations, while a service upgrade changes a broader set of equipment and may involve the utility. A project-specific evaluation should identify which limitation actually affects your home.

A larger breaker box does not automatically add power.
A panel can run out of permitted breaker positions even when a load evaluation supports another circuit. A panel can also have empty positions while the service or feeder cannot support the planned addition. Counting empty spaces does not answer the capacity question.
The rating on a new enclosure is only one part of the system. The utility service, conductors, disconnects, feeder, panel and protection must form a suitable complete arrangement.

What a subpanel can do.
A subpanel receives power from another panel or disconnect and distributes it to additional circuits. It may serve a garage, addition, workshop or another defined area. Its location can make a circuit layout more practical.
It does not increase the capacity of the upstream service. The feeder and its protection, the new loads and the existing supply must be evaluated together. A main breaker installed in a downstream panel does not by itself turn that panel into service equipment.

Why the professional evaluation matters.
A load evaluation considers the actual service and proposed use under the applicable requirements. Homeowner observations are useful, but they do not replace equipment identification and the technical design. Avoid treating a breaker total or a photo as a capacity calculation.
Requirements depend on the adopted code, jurisdiction, utility and project scope. An applicable edition or utility rule should be checked for the actual permit and equipment, rather than copying the newest published code into every project.

Ask whether the limiting factor is circuit space, capacity, condition or a desired feature. Then ask which proposed work addresses it. That distinction makes it easier to compare an additional circuit, subpanel, panel replacement and full service upgrade on a like-for-like basis.
