Combination-type AFCI describes protection against series and parallel arcing. It does not automatically mean AFCI plus GFCI. Dual-function is the term used for a device that provides both protective functions.
A device may also be tamper-resistant or weather-resistant. Those describe other features; neither abbreviation alone tells you that GFCI protection is present.

Location rules and the work being performed can overlap. Replacing a receptacle may require an AFCI review as well as a GFCI review. Required protections are not interchangeable choices based only on personal preference.
The electrician checks the applicable installation method. A dual-function receptacle installed anywhere on a circuit does not automatically satisfy every AFCI arrangement; exact instructions and the adopted requirements matter.

Damaged insulation, loose connections, missing grounding or a circuit that is unsuitable for the load still need attention. Protective devices reduce particular risks; they do not prevent every shock or fire.
If an inspection report mentions “AFCI/GFCI protection,” share the exact wording and location already identified. You do not need to remove covers, expose wiring or inspect concealed labels to start a conversation.

A GFCI watches for current leaking away from its intended path. An AFCI watches for certain dangerous arcing patterns. They are looking for different problems. A dual-function device combines those two jobs.
The familiar breaker also has a job: overcurrent protection for a properly selected circuit. A GFCI receptacle does not replace that breaker. A suitable GFCI or dual-function breaker incorporates protective functions at the panel.
Ask which protections the circuit needs and how they will be provided. The answer depends on the installation, not just whether the button or label looks familiar.
