GFCI Will Not Reset or Keeps Tripping?

A GFCI that will not reset does not automatically mean the outlet has failed. Missing incoming power, a wiring issue, a continuing fault or the device’s protective lockout may be involved. Report what you have noticed and arrange the appropriate diagnostic visit. Do not force the button, bypass protection or keep repeating resets.

Unknown-fault investigation is paid diagnostic work. The charge is explained before approval.

Choose what you already noticed.

These explanations help you describe a concern. They do not diagnose the circuit or ask you to recreate a fault.

Will not reset

The button will not stay set.

Missing supply, a continuing fault, an installation issue or internal lockout may be involved. Do not force the button or repeatedly try it. Tell us what stopped working and when.

Trips again

Power returns, then stops again.

The circuit, connected equipment, moisture or device condition may be involved. Report what you already noticed; do not deliberately repeat the fault or bypass protection.

Several outlets stopped

More than one location is affected.

The locations may share protection, or another interruption may be involved. Report affected rooms and lights. A room layout alone cannot establish the circuit arrangement.

Indicator changed

A light is on, off or different.

The meaning depends on the exact device and button state. No light does not automatically mean failure, and a green light is not a safety certificate. Use existing paperwork or safely visible exterior information.

Several causes can look similar.

Incoming power

A protective device may not reset when its required supply is absent. That does not by itself identify where the interruption began.

A continuing fault

The circuit or connected equipment may still have a condition that causes protection to operate.

Installation or device condition

A connection problem or internal lockout may be involved. The symptom alone cannot distinguish these conditions.

03 / GFCI Will Not Reset

A light color is not a universal diagnosis.

Indicator meaning depends on the make, model family, generation and button state. Leviton’s current indicator guide and Eaton’s newer Slim family describe different conventions. “Green means safe” and “no light means broken” are not reliable cross-brand answers.

Share only a model name already available on the intact exterior or in paperwork. Do not open the device or remove a cover to find it. A green light or a successful reset does not certify the condition of the circuit.

What to tell the office.

Tell us the affected locations, the timing, any other lights or outlets involved, equipment you already know was operating, recent work, and any rain or water exposure. Mention heat, discoloration, crackling or a burning smell without approaching or touching the equipment.

An electrician’s diagnostic visit identifies the cause and helps define the repair. The charge is explained and approved before paid work begins. A complimentary hands-off visual assessment is different from fault tracing or a comprehensive electrical inspection.

05 / GFCI Will Not Reset

In Simple Terms

The reset button is not a verdict on whether the outlet is good or bad. A protective shutoff can stay open because power is missing, a fault is still present, or the device cannot safely return to service.

The job is to identify the reason. Forcing it closed, bypassing protection or repeatedly trying it does not answer that question. We start with what you have noticed and arrange the appropriate evaluation.

If equipment is wet, damaged or unusually hot, leave it alone and seek prompt guidance. With smoke, fire or immediate danger, move to safety and call 911.

Your questions, answered.

Does no light mean the GFCI is bad?

No. Indicator states differ by device. Some states can represent missing power or normal operation. The exact manual matters.

Does a green light prove everything is safe?

No. Interpret it using the exact manual and device state; it does not certify the circuit.

Should I keep pressing reset?

No. Repeated operation is not a diagnosis, particularly when there are warning signs. Do not force or bypass the device.

Why do ordinary-looking outlets stop too?

Some may share upstream protection. Other interruptions are also possible. Report the pattern rather than assuming a particular cause.

Can you quote a replacement before testing?

A known replacement can be estimated. An unexplained failure needs its cause assessed before anyone promises that a replacement will solve it.

Is diagnostic testing free?

No. Published policy distinguishes a complimentary hands-off visual assessment from paid diagnostic testing. The charge is explained before paid work.
