How One GFCI Can Protect Other Outlets
Some ordinary-looking outlets receive GFCI protection from a device elsewhere on the circuit. The electrical connection determines that protection, not the room or the distance between outlets. An electrician can identify the protected locations, check operation and apply the labels required for the installation.

An outlet supplied before a protective receptacle, or outside its protected path, is not covered by that device’s GFCI function. Select a view to see the difference between protection at a receptacle and at the circuit origin.
Protection starts at the GFCI receptacle.
Outside this receptacle’s GFCI coverage.
The GFCI function protects its face and correctly connected downstream locations. It does not extend backward to the upstream outlet or supply-side wiring.
Protection starts at a suitable GFCI breaker.
Supply-side equipment is outside this branch breaker’s GFCI coverage.
A suitable breaker provides GFCI protection from the branch-circuit origin. The exact panel, device and circuit must be compatible.

Upstream, downstream, LINE and LOAD.

Labels describe a particular condition.
Required labels help identify protected locations. “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground” describe different facts; neither is a whole-circuit safety certificate. The exact required markings depend on the installation and applicable rules.
A permitted GFCI-protected replacement on an ungrounded circuit remains ungrounded unless a legitimate equipment-grounding path is provided. Some equipment has grounding needs that a protective replacement alone does not meet.

In Simple Terms
Think of a protective shutoff on a path that can serve several locations. If the shutoff opens, those locations can lose power together. The real circuit may branch, so a home’s room layout is not a map of the electrical path.
You may therefore have GFCI protection at an outlet that has no test and reset buttons on its face. The buttons can be somewhere else. A label and the electrician’s checks help explain the arrangement.
This is a question about coverage, not permission to add more outlets or a reason to assume every nearby outlet is protected. Ratings, connected loads and the circuit design still matter.

Do all protected outlets need test and reset buttons?
No. Protection may be provided elsewhere on the circuit.
Can a garage or bathroom device affect another room?
Yes, if the circuit is arranged that way. A room name alone does not establish the connections.
How many outlets can one GFCI protect?
There is no universal outlet-count answer. Circuit design, ratings and connected loads matter. A feed-through current rating is not permission to add an unlimited number of outlets.
Does downstream protection add a ground?
No. An ungrounded circuit remains ungrounded unless a proper equipment-grounding path is added.
Can a photo establish which outlets are protected?
No. An exterior photo cannot trace concealed connections or establish electrical safety.
