Correct a grounding defect
An intended grounding path may exist but be defective. Identify and correct the actual fault.
A grounding-style outlet does not create a grounding path, and GFCI protection does not add one. Options depend on the existing circuit, intended equipment and applicable replacement rules. An electrician can evaluate the appropriate protective, grounding or circuit improvement.

These are possible evaluation paths, not a universal three-slot replacement recipe. The electrician must establish which arrangement is permitted, any required identification, equipment requirements and local interpretation for the actual installation.
An intended grounding path may exist but be defective. Identify and correct the actual fault.
A suitable grounding improvement may be possible where the existing wiring and applicable rules support it.
A permitted protected receptacle replacement may be an option, with required labels. It remains ungrounded if no grounding path is added.

The Leviton device instructions explain that product’s function and compatibility. They are not a substitute for adopted-code replacement and labeling requirements. Ask what protection is provided, whether an actual grounding path exists and what the equipment needs.
Do not use a separate ground rod or a neutral-to-ground shortcut as a presumed solution. Have the intended grounding/bonding path and permitted options evaluated professionally.

Bring details of appliances or planned equipment. Manufacturer requirements and the actual wiring affect the options. For example, the cited Leviton GFTR1 instructions allow copper or copper-clad conductors, and prohibit aluminum directly at that device. A generic “add GFCIs everywhere” prescription overlooks compatibility.

A GFCI is a protective shutoff for a particular kind of current leakage. A ground is a physical electrical path. They do different jobs, so adding one does not automatically create the other.
A newer-looking outlet can still be connected to older wiring. Its face and an exterior photo do not establish what is behind it. You do not need to use a tester or remove a cover to ask for help.
The plan may involve a permitted protective replacement, repair or an allowed retrofit of a grounding path, or a new grounded circuit. The existing installation and intended equipment determine which options can fit.
Ask what the proposed work improves, what stays the same, which identification is required and whether your equipment needs an actual ground. A device replacement and a cable-system replacement are different scopes.
