A 100-to-200-amp service upgrade may be appropriate when the evaluated demand and your plans require more capacity than the existing service can support. It is a whole-service decision, not simply a larger breaker or a new panel label. The project must account for the incoming supply, customer equipment and required approvals. Some properties can meet their goals with a different scope.

Ask which limitation has actually been identified. Existing capacity may be sufficient even when there are no spare breaker positions. Conversely, an open position does not establish that the supply can support a new load. A panel replacement, subpanel and service upgrade solve different problems.

The written scope can include utility delivery arrangements, meter equipment, service conductors and raceways, disconnects, grounding and bonding, and panel or feeder work. The evaluation determines which components need to change; the service rating alone does not provide a universal replacement list.
The utility may need to review its facilities or approve the location and equipment. Customer and utility responsibilities depend on the arrangement. Confirm those requirements before ordering equipment and before treating an installation date as a reconnection commitment.

Confirm the delivery arrangement, equipment acceptance and any utility work.
Include permits, access, interruption planning and the agreed restoration.

Share exact specifications when available and identify when each addition is likely. HVAC, cooking, water heating, EV charging, a pool or spa, and an accessory building can affect the discussion. A generic category does not tell the evaluator the electrical input or how the equipment will operate.
A useful recommendation describes the accepted evaluation method and the assumptions behind it. Compare realistic near-term needs with future possibilities. Floor area, monthly energy use and a sum of breaker handle ratings alone do not establish the proper service size.

Where the existing arrangement and condition are suitable, an accepted management strategy may allow a selected load to operate within a defined limit. Compare lower configured charging power, demand-based adjustment or a controller that pauses an eligible load. Their behavior and equipment requirements differ.
Management is not a repair for damaged equipment and does not add physical circuit positions. It also needs to fit the way you use the property. A strategy that leaves an impractical charging window may not meet your goal even if a compatible design is available.

Higher-capacity planning should follow evaluated demand and the utility-approved arrangement. It can involve different metering, voltage or phase considerations and utility facilities. Do not assume that a dwelling example applies to a commercial service or a multi-tenant property.
The phrase “400 amp service” can describe different arrangements and rating conventions. Some meter equipment distinguishes a 320 A continuous rating from a 400 A maximum rating. Ask for the exact catalog number, its listing and the approved design rather than treating the shorthand as 400 A of continuous supply.
If you manage a business or several tenant spaces, identify the use, equipment, utility, existing voltage and phase if already known, and shutdown constraints. Confirm the project-specific offering and any engineering involvement before relying on a residential example.

A useful estimate explains what the service will support, which equipment and approvals are included, who handles the utility work, and any remaining assumptions. It should distinguish the overall project lead time from the planned interruption and identify restoration responsibilities.
Equipment prices are not installed-project totals. Keep the contractor scope, utility charges and any third-party civil work visible when comparing options. There is no useful universal price for every project described as a 200-amp upgrade.

A 100-to-200-amp project asks whether the complete supply arrangement should be changed to serve your intended loads. A bigger-looking box or a different main breaker does not answer that question. The equipment, conductors, utility and approvals have to fit the design.
You do not need to arrive with a chosen amperage. Bring the goal and available equipment information. Ask what finding supports the recommendation, what alternatives were considered and what each option means for everyday use. The best starting point is a clearly explained scope for your property.

A breaker change is not a substitute for verifying the service design. The relevant conductors, equipment, utility arrangement and approvals must support the proposed rating. This is work for qualified professionals.
The rating alone does not establish safety or whether an upgrade is needed. Condition, the approved arrangement and the loads being served require separate evaluation. A symptom should be assessed rather than diagnosed from amperage.
