Electrical Service Upgrade Permits, Utilities and Timing
A service upgrade can require both building-authority approval and coordination with the electric utility. Those are separate responsibilities. The overall schedule can include design, equipment acceptance, permits and utility work before the planned power interruption. Reconnection depends on the requirements for the property and completed work, so the schedule should identify its assumptions and remaining approvals.

Two approvals to identify
The permitting authority administers the applicable permit and inspection process. The serving utility manages its service and metering requirements and the work assigned to it. Approval from one does not erase the other party’s requirements.
Use the actual address, property category and electric account information already available to identify both. A postal city is not a municipal-boundary check or proof of the serving utility. For commercial or multi-tenant work, identify the responsible property decision-maker and relevant operating constraints early.

Before equipment is ordered
Confirm the proposed arrangement, meter location and exact equipment acceptance before committing to a purchase. A meter enclosure’s manufacturer rating does not prove the utility accepts that catalog number and configuration for the project. A general approval list also does not approve every accessory or the full installation.
The MEG approved-enclosure list reviewed for this guide is revised August 19, 2026. Its notes apply to participating utilities and distinguish the approved enclosure scope from other equipment or attachments. Confirm additional serving-utility requirements and any newer revision before ordering.
For example, Lakeland Electric’s currently linked Revision 7 manual has its own criteria for the stated 200 A single-phase meter-socket arrangements and requires approval of meter centers before purchase. That is a utility-specific requirement, not a rule to apply to every Florida property.

The milestones
The project plan should show who completes each stage and which approvals are still outstanding. Design and procurement can proceed on a different timescale from the physical interruption. A schedule is useful when its dependencies are visible, not when it promises a universal number of days.
For a Lakeland Electric-served property, confirm the utility’s application and service requirements as well as the building permit and inspection. Lakeland Electric explains that an inspection release alone may not complete every prerequisite for energizing service. Ask who will verify the utility clearance and arrange reconnection.

Project lead time and time without power
The project may include evaluation, utility review, permit processing and equipment delivery before the scheduled power interruption. Do not assume that every day between approval of the estimate and closeout is a day without electricity.
The planned interruption still needs a realistic scope. Inspection, corrective items, utility release and reconnection scheduling can affect restoration. Ask which milestones must be complete before the interruption starts and what the plan is if a remaining requirement prevents restoration at the expected time.

Verify the adopted code and project category
The Florida Building Commission identifies the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code as effective December 31, 2023. Orlando’s current code page lists the 2020 NEC for its stated application period. Confirm the actual authority, permit date, occupancy and alteration scope before applying any code edition.
A newer manufacturer code article is not proof that the newer edition is adopted for your project. Likewise, Florida’s 2026 under-$7,500 provision for certain work does not make an electrical service upgrade permit-free; the specified exemption excludes electrical work.

Prepare for the interruption
Discuss property access, occupants, business operations and equipment that relies on continuous power. Flag electrically powered medical equipment or other critical needs before scheduling so an appropriate plan can be agreed. Do not assume the installation can stay energized to avoid an interruption.
Ask who submits each application, confirms inspection clearance and communicates with the utility. Keep a point of contact and an agreed update process. If the project includes excavation, wall work or paving, separate electrical restoration from the finish repairs promised in the written scope.
The estimate should describe the anticipated milestones and what remains subject to utility or authority confirmation. It should not promise same-day restoration for every service project.

Will the power be off for the entire project?
Planning and approvals can occur before the scheduled interruption. The expected outage period should be discussed separately and confirmed against the work, inspection and utility requirements.
Does a passed inspection mean the utility reconnects immediately?
It can be a required milestone, but utility requirements and scheduling also matter. Ask who sends the clearance, who confirms it was accepted and who arranges reconnection.
Can I order the meter equipment first?
Ask the project professional to confirm the serving utility’s acceptance of the exact catalog number and arrangement before ordering. A manufacturer rating or general equipment list does not approve every installation.
Which authority applies if my address says Tampa, Zephyrhills or Orlando?
A postal city does not settle municipal jurisdiction or the electric utility. Use the property address to verify both before relying on a checklist or timeline.
Can I count on same-day restoration?
Do not assume it. The project-specific plan must account for the scope, inspections, utility coordination, unexpected conditions and any required corrections.
