Dryer circuits and connection planning
A dryer that fits the laundry space may still need a different electrical connection. Start with the complete model and its U.S. installation instructions, then have the existing circuit and proposed work evaluated.

Which kind of dryer are you installing?
Full-size electric, compact electric and gas dryers can have different electrical requirements. Do not transfer the circuit requirement from one dryer type to another. A heat-pump label also does not establish a universal supply requirement.
| Example in Whirlpool W11559778A | What the manual distinguishes | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size U.S. electric models | 120/240-volt supply and a separate 30-amp circuit for the applicable models. | Confirm the model covered by the instructions and evaluate the existing connection. |
| Compact 120-volt electric models | A different supply arrangement, including a separate 20-amp circuit for the applicable models. | Do not assume every electric dryer uses the full-size arrangement. |
| Gas models | Separate electrical and gas/venting installation requirements. | Coordinate the electrical work with the qualified installer’s mechanical scope. |
Three-wire and four-wire: the important distinction
For a neutral-using dryer, a four-wire arrangement separates the neutral from the equipment-grounding conductor. A legacy three-wire connection may rely on a narrowly qualified existing-installation exception. The presence of a three-slot receptacle does not establish that the exception applies.
Under the applicable existing-installation rules, the electrician must check the supply system, absence of a separate equipment-grounding conductor, neutral size and insulation or qualifying service-cable origin, and the required bonding arrangement. New work cannot be treated as an existing installation simply because an old receptacle is available.
Whirlpool’s cited U.S. instructions require four-wire connections for new branch circuits, mobile homes, recreational vehicles and where local rules prohibit grounding through the neutral. Where those instructions require a GFCI-protected supply, they also call for four-wire connection. The model instructions and adopted project rules both matter.

Replacing a dryer versus relocating the laundry
For a same-location replacement, review the existing circuit’s suitability, condition and connection against the new model. Reusing a circuit is a conclusion from that assessment, not a promise based on age or plug shape.
Relocation can change the circuit route, grounding arrangement, receptacle position and applicable protection. Altering an existing circuit can also change whether an exception remains available. Describe the entire planned change before choosing a cord or scheduling installation.

Prepare for the delivery and electrical visit
Provide the model, suffix, manual, proposed location and whether the dryer is electric or gas. Tell us if the dryer is being moved, if the outlet has been altered or if there are unexplained trips or loss of power. Do not open the connection compartment or move the dryer to photograph wiring.
Dryer venting, gas work, stacking, physical placement and appliance startup need an agreed installer scope. If the current dryer fails to heat, the cause could be electrical or appliance-related; replacing a receptacle without diagnosis may not address it.
In Simple Terms
A dryer connection must match more than the plug. The circuit has to provide the right supply, protection and grounding for the exact dryer. Some older three-wire installations may qualify to remain, but that requires checking conditions you cannot establish by looking at the outlet.
A new neutral-using dryer circuit separates neutral and ground. Moving the laundry or altering the circuit can change the requirements, even if you plan to keep the same dryer. Send the model and describe the project; leave connection changes to the electrical installer.
Your questions, answered.
Can I solve a mismatch with an adapter?
Do not assume an adapter makes the circuit suitable. Have the model, existing circuit and allowed connection method evaluated before use.
Does a four-slot outlet prove the circuit is correct?
No. The visible receptacle cannot establish the wiring, grounding, protection or condition behind it.
Can you price installation before I buy the dryer?
A model shortlist and the intended location help define the estimate. Final requirements depend on the selected model and assessed conditions.
