Kitchen and Under-Cabinet Lighting That Fits Your Worktops
Under-cabinet lighting can put useful light directly on a work surface that overhead lighting leaves in shadow. A successful layout accounts for cabinet geometry, counter finish, fixture visibility and how the system will be powered and controlled. Bars and tape systems each have useful applications.
Start with the room, the task and the way you want to use the light.
Light the work surface, not your shadow.
When the main light is behind you, your body can shade the countertop. Under-cabinet light puts the source closer to the task. Toe-kick and display-cabinet lighting have different jobs and should not be counted as a substitute for usable preparation light.
Cabinet lips, changes in height, windows, corners and appliances shape the layout. Counter finish matters too: polished stone can reflect the light source. A sample helps reveal the view before a repeated run is approved.

Bars and tape are complete systems.
A light bar has a defined body and its own documented connection arrangement. A tape system can follow a more flexible line, but the tape, channel, lens, driver and control must be selected together. Neither approach is automatically the best for every cabinet.

Understand reflections before installation.
Light-source position changes what you see while standing and sitting. A diffuser can soften visible points, but it does not guarantee that every polished surface will show an even reflection. Compare the actual cabinet geometry and the proposed fixture.
For color-sensitive tasks, review color rendering as well as color temperature. The same warm-white setting can look different beside existing ceiling lamps and on different cabinet finishes.

A useful current-family comparison.
HALO’s March 2026 selection guide distinguishes the HU11 bar, HU30M modular system and HFL tape system. HU11 and HU30M differ in selectable color options; HU30M includes a dim-to-warm option in the guide. HFL uses a 24V tape/channel arrangement with driver choices.
These families are comparison examples, not a stock list or a brand affiliation. The reviewed matrix lists damp-location ratings; it does not make the equipment suitable for direct rain. Exact components, controls and availability need confirmation.

Keep the hidden parts serviceable.
A driver is the electronics that supplies an LED system. Its location affects access if it needs service. Agree on how the power supply, connectors and controls will be reached, and follow the documented maximum runs and connection methods.
Separate supply, wiring, installation and finish restoration in the agreed scope. A remodel may offer routing access that is unavailable in a finished kitchen. A general-purpose switch and a driver-specific dimmer are not interchangeable just because both fit a wall box.

In Simple Terms
A strip of bright dots can look very different once reflected in a polished counter. A channel and diffuser may soften the visible points, while placement changes where reflections appear. The power supply and dimmer are part of the lighting system, even when they are hidden from view.
Think of tape lighting like a coordinated kit rather than a roll you can power with anything. The driver provides the electrical supply the LEDs need. The wall control has to work with that driver, and the pieces should remain accessible for service.
Choose the result you want first: clear preparation light, a gentle evening setting or a decorative accent. A kitchen can have more than one of these, but each needs its own placement and operating plan.

Can every tape light use a wall dimmer?
No. The driver and control method must match the exact tape system and electrical supply.
Should kitchen lighting be cool white?
There is no single best color. Compare samples with the cabinets, counters and adjoining room lighting.
Will under-cabinet lighting need new wiring?
It depends on the selected system and existing supply. The driver location, switch arrangement and cable access are part of the assessed scope.
