Preparing for a Generator Connection Installation
Bring your generator information, backup priorities and property address to the estimate discussion. The proposal should explain the connection equipment, installation scope and required approvals. An existing malfunction needs a separate diagnostic discussion.
We explain the appropriate visit and any charges before paid work begins.
Your preparation checklist
Use documents and observations already safely available. No cover removal or testing is needed to prepare for an estimate.
A preparation aid only. Checking these items does not approve an installation.
Ask what the installed price includes
| Stage | Scope to clarify |
|---|---|
| Assessment | Generator and panel identity, intended loads, location and access. |
| Equipment | Inlet, cord if included, transfer equipment, any panel work and compatibility documentation. |
| Installation | Connection path, suitable materials, supports, restoration responsibilities and exclusions. |
| Approvals | Required permits, inspection stages and utility coordination for the actual project. |
| Verification | Labels, circuit identification and checks of the installed arrangement. |
| Handoff | Equipment manuals, operating demonstration and clear limits. |

Florida permits depend on the property
The Florida Building Commission identifies the 8th Edition (2023) as effective December 31, 2023 and displays a 9th Edition (2026) draft. A draft label does not establish the code in force for your project. The applicable authority must confirm the adopted requirements and amendments.
Tampa, Hillsborough County and Pasco County publish permitting resources, but a general permit page does not determine the exact scope for an inlet-only project. Confirm the authority for the actual address, application type and required inspection stages.

Agree on utility and outdoor-location requirements
The proposed arrangement needs review against current utility requirements. Tampa Electric’s public portable-generator warning must not be treated as blanket approval of a manufacturer-described connection.
Discuss drainage, weather exposure, exhaust direction, nearby openings and a suitable cord route before choosing an inlet position. Keep a portable generator outdoors and away from occupied spaces; an inlet location does not make an unsafe generator position acceptable. Protect equipment from wet conditions according to its instructions without enclosing the generator or defeating ventilation.

Know what the estimate does and does not cover
A free estimate prices defined installation or upgrade work. Troubleshooting an unexplained problem is paid diagnostic work; discuss the visit type before scheduling. A proposal should identify any additional approvals or restoration work rather than hiding them in a vague installation promise.
Ask which equipment you supply and what warranty applies to each part of the scope. Do not assume generator-equipment terms automatically describe the coverage for separately installed connection hardware.
In Simple Terms
A good estimate answers: What are we installing? What must match? Who handles permits and restoration? What will I be shown when the work is complete?
You bring your goal and the information you already have. The electrician defines a suitable system and scope. The completed handoff should explain your actual equipment, not a generic breaker sequence.
Your questions, answered.
Does an installation need a permit?
Check the proposed scope with the applicable authority. Do not assume a permanent connection is exempt.
How much will it cost?
Request a defined, site-specific estimate. Equipment-only prices do not include the complete installed scope.
How long will installation take?
Scheduling, equipment availability, approvals and any additional work affect timing. Confirm the actual plan rather than relying on a generic promise.
Is the generator cord included?
The written estimate should state that clearly and identify the suitable assembly and length.
Let’s plan your backup connection.
Tell us your generator, backup priorities and installation question. Existing faults need a diagnostic visit; an installation estimate does not troubleshoot a problem.
Clear scope before paid work.
A free estimate prices defined installation or upgrade work. Investigating an unexplained fault is paid diagnostic work; the charge is explained and approved before troubleshooting.
An existing connection is not working? Ask about diagnostics.Based in Zephyrhills and the Tampa Bay area. We confirm availability for your Florida service address and project.
Our office answers 24/7. Arrival windows describe expected arrival, not a completion guarantee. View scheduling and fee details.
Read our current warranty terms. Qualifying work and disclosed discounted work have different coverage terms.
Suspected carbon-monoxide poisoning? Get outside to fresh air and call 911. Smoke, fire or immediate danger? Move to safety and call 911. For other urgent electrical concerns, contact emergency service. Do not touch or open suspect equipment.
Research checked September 10, 2026; safety, utility and Florida code-status sources rechecked September 11, 2026. The assessed property, exact equipment instructions and applicable local requirements govern the work. Exact model compatibility and local approval must be confirmed for the proposed installation.
