Clear answers for your home

Choosing Essential Loads for Portable Backup Power

Start with a priority list. Identify what matters most, what can run at different times and what can wait. Then have the equipment requirements and generator output assessed so your operating plan reflects those priorities.

We explain the appropriate visit and any charges before paid work begins.

01 / Essential Backup Loads

Make the priorities visible

This checklist collects topics for a conversation with the electrician. Choosing an item does not confirm that your generator can power it. Your selections can accompany the estimate request below.

What would you like to discuss?

Pick priorities for your estimate. These selections do not calculate capacity or confirm any appliance can run.

No priorities selected yet.

Discuss these priorities
02 / Essential Backup Loads

Separate importance from capacity

Highest priority

What would make an outage hardest to manage? List the actual appliance or system, not only the room.

Useful if capacity permits

Which conveniences matter after your first priorities? Discuss whether intermittent use is acceptable.

Can wait

Which loads can remain off during portable operation? Be realistic about the trade-offs.

Running demand is only part of the picture

Some equipment needs additional power when starting. A list of running watts can miss that requirement. Use the actual equipment documentation and generator limits rather than an unsourced appliance wattage table.

A split-phase generator can also have per-leg limits. Loads being connected does not mean they can all run at once, and alternating loads does not make a single oversized load suitable.

Large loads deserve an individual discussion

Central cooling, electric water heating, cooking, pumps and EV charging can materially change the plan. Do not assume a soft starter makes any generator adequate for central air.

For medical equipment, discuss requirements with the equipment provider and arrange a separate continuity plan. A manually managed portable connection is not uninterrupted or life-safety backup.

06 / Essential Backup Loads

In Simple Terms

“What is connected?” and “What can run together?” are different questions. A useful plan answers both.

Write down what matters most, then let the equipment assessment establish the limits. The goal is a practical outage routine you understand, not a long list that the generator cannot support.

Your questions, answered.

Can I run central air?

That needs an equipment-specific assessment. The inlet’s amp rating alone does not answer it.

Can I run everything one at a time?

Not necessarily. One large load may still exceed what the generator and installation can support.

Does adding appliance watts give the complete answer?

No. Starting behavior, voltage, circuit arrangement and generator limits also matter.

Does this checklist size my generator?

No. It records discussion priorities only and makes no capacity or safety determination.

Your home. A defined scope.

Let’s plan your backup connection.

Tell us your generator, backup priorities and installation question. Existing faults need a diagnostic visit; an installation estimate does not troubleshoot a problem.

Clear scope before paid work.

A free estimate prices defined installation or upgrade work. Investigating an unexplained fault is paid diagnostic work; the charge is explained and approved before troubleshooting.

An existing connection is not working? Ask about diagnostics.
