A workshop power plan starts with the actual tools and what may run together. A saw, dust collector and other garage equipment can have different supply and connection requirements. Record the models and work locations before deciding whether existing circuits, new dedicated circuits or a broader supply change should be evaluated.

Start with the way you use the space. Identify fixed workstations, movable equipment and the activities that overlap. A tool running alone does not establish that the same circuit can support the tool and another load together.

A broad category such as table saw does not identify its electrical requirements. For example, Grizzly’s March 2026 G1023RL-series manual distinguishes the RL/RLW/RLX models from the RLWX/RLX5 group and gives them different circuit requirements. The manual applies to its stated production generation.
Bring the actual model and manual for each tool, including any dust collector or supporting equipment. Avoid choosing a breaker, cable or receptacle from an online generic appliance chart. The proposed connection must follow the relevant instructions and the assessed installation.

The garage branch-circuit provision in the 2020 NEC addresses required garage receptacle supply in its covered dwelling scope. It does not mean every tool or every garage outlet must have a separate circuit. Existing conditions, the new work and the adopted rules still need review.

Place connection points where the work happens while keeping equipment access and the room layout practical. More outlets may improve convenience, but adding them to the same circuit does not increase its available capacity.
Tell us about finished walls, attic access, ceiling height and areas that need to remain usable during the work. Routing and restoration can influence the project even when two tool locations are close to each other.

A detached building can raise a broader supply and distribution question. Several planned loads may justify assessing a feeder and subpanel instead of treating every addition as an isolated outlet request. That assessment includes the available supply and the actual building relationship.
A subpanel provides distribution and breaker positions; it does not manufacture more service capacity. Its suitability depends on the proposed loads and supply design. Share credible future plans now, without assuming that an upgrade is automatically necessary.

Collect the manuals, describe the workstations and identify what may run together. Ask whether the estimate includes connection equipment, access work, finish restoration and permit coordination. Keep equipment purchase costs separate from the electrical installation.
If existing equipment causes repeated tripping, buzzing, unusual odor or another abnormal condition, describe the observation. Do not repeatedly recreate the problem, touch wiring or open an enclosure. A diagnostic visit can establish what work is appropriate.

A workshop plan is a plan for how you work. The question is not only whether a plug fits or a tool turns on. The electrician must consider the exact tools, what runs together and the supply behind the outlets.
A convenient outlet is a location choice. A dedicated circuit is a circuit-use choice. A subpanel is a distribution choice. None of those labels alone proves that the property can support the planned demand.
Before you move equipment into place, collect the models and explain the work you want to do. That gives the electrical plan a useful starting point without asking you to inspect or design the wiring yourself.
