Where should alarms go in a Florida home?
Placement depends on the home, what each alarm detects, the exact product instructions and the requirements applying to the project. General guidance is useful, but it is not a complete installation plan.

General placement guidance is a starting point.
USFA recommends smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level, including basements. Federal CO guidance recommends alarms on each level and outside sleeping areas.
These are general safety recommendations. The exact product instructions and applicable Florida/local requirements control the installation. A combination alarm’s location must suit both smoke and CO functions.

Florida rules depend on the work.
The official adoption pages identify the 8th Edition (2023) Florida Building Code and Florida Fire Prevention Code, effective December 31, 2023. Material about development of a later edition is not proof that it is already in effect.
A repair, a Level 1 alteration and an addition are different project categories. A one-family home, a condominium common area and a monitored commercial property also require different scope decisions.

The address and environment matter.
Confirm the actual city/county building and fire authorities, project type and applicable permit treatment. A ZIP code alone does not establish the jurisdiction. Do not assume that a county rule applies unchanged inside a municipality.
Heat, steam, dust and unconditioned spaces affect product suitability. The reviewed Kidde DETECT AC guide and First Alert CO5-B10D guide specify indoor temperature limits; that does not make an ordinary indoor smoke/CO unit suitable for a garage, attic, porch, RV or boat.
Manufactured/mobile homes and specialized hearing-access notification need exact product and project review. No universal placement dimension or accessible-system approval follows from a product photograph.

Portable generators: prevent exposure as well as adding alarms.
CPSC directs that portable generators run outdoors at least twenty feet from the home, with exhaust directed away, never in a garage even with open doors. Battery backup does not make unsafe generator operation acceptable.
An electrical transfer arrangement and CO prevention address different risks. Use the generator service guide for electrical connection options and the manufacturer’s instructions for the equipment. If CO is suspected, leave and call 911 from safety.

In Simple Terms
A general floor plan helps explain the idea of coverage. It cannot tell you the complete requirements for your particular home. Room use, levels, alarm type, the work being done and the device instructions can change the answer.
“Florida allows a sealed battery in some circumstances” is not the same as “any hardwired alarm can be replaced with a battery-only one.” A provision applies within its stated conditions, and other power or connection requirements may remain.
The practical starting point is to describe the home and the project accurately. We can then discuss a location and replacement scope. A broader inspection, an insurer document and a permit inspection are separate questions; none is automatically included in a free replacement estimate.

Is the newest national code automatically Florida law?
No. The adopted edition, Florida amendments, local requirements, occupancy and project scope must be confirmed.
Can every hardwired alarm be replaced with a sealed battery-only model?
No blanket permission follows from the sealed-battery statute. Required power and interconnection must be preserved.
Should a CO alarm be directly above a fuel appliance?
Do not assume so. Follow the exact product’s placement instructions and applicable requirements; CPSC does not recommend placing CO alarms above fuel-burning appliances.
