Aluminum Branch Wiring: Repair and Replacement Options
An aluminum-wiring concern needs a defined scope before a solution is chosen. Identify the affected conductors and their condition, then compare suitable connection remediation with replacement. This guide concerns older branch wiring—not every aluminum conductor in a home.

First, identify what the report describes
CPSC Publication 516 addresses older small aluminum branch circuits commonly installed from 1965 into the mid-1970s. Its repair recommendations exclude copper-clad aluminum and larger service/appliance circuits. Appropriately specified aluminum feeders are a different application.
Bring the original report and existing professional photos. Do not expose wiring to identify the metal yourself. An exterior photograph cannot establish concealed condition.
Repairing connections and replacing cable are different scopes
The CPSC bulletin identifies copper replacement, COPALUM and AlumiConn within its defined historic branch-wiring scope. It describes AlumiConn as an alternative when COPALUM is unavailable. That dated recommendation is not a guarantee for an unidentified product or installation.

A few repaired outlets do not establish complete remediation
CPSC calls for treating every affected connection or splice in a complete remediation. Ask how the project establishes coverage, documents work and identifies inaccessible or retained conditions.
The bulletin does not accept twist-on pigtails or CO/ALR device changes as a complete permanent solution. An unspecified connector, tightening visit or antioxidant compound should not be described as equivalent to the documented methods.
