Why are my lights flickering or dimming?

The most useful starting detail is whether one fixture, several rooms or the whole home is affected. Lamps, lighting controls, electrical loading and supply disturbances call for different questions.

Unknown-fault troubleshooting is a paid diagnostic service. The charge is explained and approved before testing.

01 / Flickering or Dimming Lights

Which experience sounds familiar?

“Flickering” can describe a shimmering lamp, a change in brightness or power briefly disappearing. These patterns help organize the conversation; they do not establish the cause.

One fixture, especially when dimmed

A lamp and control pairing may matter. Tell us whether the change began after a bulb or control was replaced.

Several lights dip together

Report timing and what equipment was already operating. Do not assume this is normal or that the service is undersized.

Everything blinked off

A brief supply interruption may affect lights and electronics together. Report recurring disturbances to your serving utility.

02 / Flickering or Dimming Lights

Lamp and dimmer compatibility matters.

Dimmable lamps and controls must work together. For example, Leviton’s 6674-P0W documentation discusses compatible lamps and dimming-range adjustment. That illustrates a possible category of issue, not a universal fix.

Do not remove a control or open a fixture to investigate. Share model information only if it is already available in a receipt, manual or safely accessible label.

Your utility, your electrician, or both?

The place where power stops is not always the place where the problem started. Tell the office how much of the home is affected and whether your utility has already investigated.

Use the provider shown on your electric bill. FPL guidance below applies to its customers; Florida homes are served by different utilities.

Several areas are out or brightness is persistently abnormalContact your serving utility promptly and describe the pattern. An electrician may also need to investigate the premises.
An isolated outlet or fixture has stopped workingDescribe the location to the office. A diagnostic may be needed to distinguish the device from its supply.

When brightness stays unusually high or low.

Persistent unusual brightness across the home deserves prompt contact with your serving utility. If it can be done safely without approaching suspect equipment, stop using major appliances while seeking guidance.

Smoke, fire or immediate danger means moving to safety and calling 911. Flicker accompanied by an unexplained burning odor, heat or crackling should not be treated as a bulb-shopping question.

05 / Flickering or Dimming Lights

In Simple Terms

A light shimmering at a low dimmer setting and the whole house briefly losing power are different experiences, even if both get called “flicker.” Start by describing the pattern.

If one light is affected, the fixture and control are useful details. If several areas change together, say so when contacting the office or utility. Neither pattern, by itself, proves that you need a new panel.

Surge protection is a separate subject. A surge protective device does not provide backup power or establish the cause of an unexplained lighting problem.

Your questions, answered.

Is every flicker dangerous?

No single answer fits every pattern. Describe the extent and timing, and use the warning guidance for heat, burning odor, smoke or persistent abnormal brightness.

Could it be the LED bulb or dimmer?

Compatibility can matter. The exact lamp and control determine what guidance applies; do not assume every flicker is a compatibility issue.

Does this mean I need a panel replacement?

The symptom alone does not establish that scope. The actual condition needs investigation.

My neighbors noticed it too. Who should I call?

Report the disturbance to your serving utility with its approximate time. Shared symptoms are helpful context, not proof of the exact failure point.

Can you repair the utility supply?

Utility-owned equipment has its own repair and access requirements. The utility and electrician may need to coordinate.
