The connection no longer holds the plug securely during ordinary use.
A plug that no longer stays in place, a cracked outlet or a switch that has changed behavior can point to a device or connection concern. Stop using damaged or concerning equipment and arrange an evaluation of the affected installation.

Move to safety and call 911. For other concerning changes, stop using the affected equipment and contact an electrician promptly. Do not remove covers, touch wiring or test live equipment.
A visible symptom is a clue. It cannot determine the full repair by itself. Do not touch equipment to check temperature, try other plugs as a test or operate it again to reproduce a problem.

A receptacle’s contacts hold the plug blades. The device itself is supported by its mounting and box. Wear in one part and movement in another can feel similar in ordinary use, but they call for different professional checks.
You do not need to distinguish the cause yourself. Describe what happened during normal use and where it occurred. An exterior photo cannot establish contact condition or the supporting connection.

Switch concerns belong in the same evaluation: physical damage, changed behavior, buzzing or unreliable operation can merit attention. Some dimmers normally dissipate heat. The actual model, load, operating conditions and any unusual change matter.
Do not treat all warmth as a defect or assume it is always normal. Visible damage, odor or changed behavior should not be dismissed. Do not use touch as a temperature test.

A receptacle can carry current onward to other locations even when nothing is plugged into its face. The place where you notice the problem may not be where the problem begins.
A new outlet does not repair surrounding damaged conductor material or correct an unsuitable box on its own. Depending on the findings, the scope may include a device replacement, support/box work, an appropriate connection repair or circuit work.

Water-damaged equipment can remain unsuitable after it has dried. Flooding, salt contamination and ordinary humidity are not equivalent conditions. Avoid affected equipment and obtain qualified guidance; do not energize wet devices or approach wet electrical equipment.
An outlet has a visible face, hidden contacts and connections, and a box supporting it. A problem in any of those parts can be noticed at the same spot on the wall.
A plate can make an opening look tidy. It cannot tell you whether the contacts hold properly, the box supports the device or the wires and terminations are in suitable condition.
Replacing one worn device may be enough for one identified problem. When several places are affected, finding a shared cause can be more useful than assuming every device failed independently.
You can give us useful information without doing an electrical inspection. Tell us the room, what changed and whether you noticed it elsewhere. For smoke, flame or immediate fire danger, move to safety and call 911 instead of waiting for an appointment form.
Worn receptacle contacts can be a cause, while the plug and mounting can also matter. Avoid testing additional plugs to diagnose it yourself.
Do not scrape paint from openings or mechanisms. An electrician should determine whether contamination or damage makes replacement appropriate.
